Mor Sapir

In October of 2014, Mor Michael Sapir set out on a journey that would forever change his life – to trek the Annapurna Mountain Range in Nepal. Like many young Israelis his age, he was excited to finish his national service in the IDF, where he served as an officer in the combat engineering division, and celebrate his next stage of his life. Everything began smoothly, arriving in Nepal, meeting fellow travelers from around the world, sharing stories, hopes and dreams – and then, a horrifying snowstorm and avalanche changed everything. 43 people were killed, including 4 of Mor’s friends, and over 175 were injured- including Mor - during the storm. Due to severe frostbite, all ten of Mor’s fingers had to be amputated. This event changed his life as he now had to deal with a new reality, both physically and emotionally. Mor had set out on a journey to conquer a mountain, but soon discovered he’d have to conquer much more than that.

Rehabilitation

rehabilitation, self-discovery and rebirth

During Mor’s rehabilitation, his journey to self-discovery and rebirth as an athlete began. Not one to shy away from a challenge, Mor set his sights on climbing. Yet, how does a person who has no fingers on either hand climb? Through his drive, positive outlook and determination, Mor has become the only person in the world to climb, and compete, without fingers on both hands. In 2016, as a member of Israel's national para-climbing team, Mor entered his first competition and brought home the bronze medal - proving to himself that anything is possible. Since then, Mor has traveled all over the world proudly representing Israel, winning gold in Scotland during the Para-climbing Cup in 2017 and in 2019 received the gold medal in the American National Open and a silver in the World Championships – just a few of the medals that he has proudly achieved.

Today

Israeli Wall Climbing team

Today, Mor is a member of the Israeli Wall Climbing team for people with disabilities founded by Beit Holochem, an organization that helps rehabilitate IDF soldiers who were injured during their compulsory military service. However, as his injuries were not sustained during his service, he is obligated to pay for his own entry into competitions and all the associated expenses.
